Does anyone know how microsoft excel works? My son plays youth football and I would like to keep a record of the league table he is in and updating the table. Is the above the correct program to use and if yes, how or any other program I can use? Thanks

Microsoft Access will do this for you very easily (provided you know how to use it.

Thanks but I don`t know how to use microsoft access.
Excel will do it very easily too. I'm not entirely sure how you want to be updating the table - maually entering the info, or making Excel do it automatically from game results entered?
Difficult to explain over computer. You need, One teenager with A level computer science and it is done in a whizz. Where is StudentGal when you need her.
Seriously you can do it but you do need to find someone who can set up a template and formulas for you. Perhaps one of the team has a older brother/sister who can help
The table is a simple enough thing to create, its a case of getting the formula correct. Regarding the league table orders, a Macro is how I would do it.
A macro is a pre-recorded string of commands that, when run, will automatically sort the teams in to order and show you the latest goal differences, things like that.

From personal experience I would say you will need either a very patient person to teach you how to use it or you will have to buy a book and teach yourself (I set up Winny with the home business accounts on excel)

Microsoft Excel sounds like the asiest option. Access is a lot posher but for keeping track of youth football, it's a waste of time to build a database on it in my opinion.

The forrmulas are pretty simple to set up, it'll just be tedious and excel does have quite a good in system help so you should be fine using it :)

Sarnieken, thanks for offering to do it for me, how does macro work? I would like to attempt to set it up myself, as I like a challenge. Would it be in a computer book?
If you do it in Access you will not need macros or anything fancy (As long as you don't mind updating each teams details manually each week). Just 1 table with all your data. (E.g. Team Name, Games Played, Goals For, Goals Against, Wins, Loss, Draw, Points). It can the produce a report with your league table sorted by Points then Goal Difference.
Kiera, you could start off by looking at the Excel Help pages (open Excel and press 'F1').

Depending on which version you are running, there are introductions, overviews, 'lessons' and help pages relating to specific tasks.

Try a few basic tasks first - selecting cells, formatting headers / borders / backgrounds, and a few simple formulae - so that you get a feel for it.

Then, post back here once you have a more specific idea what you are trying to do. We will do our best to help.

Hi

I`ve managed to import data into the excel program but am finding it difficult to get the formula to calculate the figures.

In the league table you have the columns W(won) D(drew) L(lost)
every game you win you get 3 points and drawn 1 point . How do you calucate the formula for the points column, so everytime you update the wins, etc the points column updates automatically. Second the column GF (goal for) take away column GA(goal against) in the column GD(goal difference) and lastly the points (teams) have to be in decending order.
Hope this makes sense.

Column A is Team Name
Col B is games played
Col C is Games Won
Col D is games drawn
Col E is games lost
Col F is Goals For
Col G is Goals Against
Col H is Goal Difference
Col I is Points
You will be entering data in row 2 downwards
In Cell I2 enter this formula "=(C2*3)+(D2*1)" without the quotes. (If it works copy and paste it in the rest of the Column I cells you are using.
In Cell H2 enter this formula "=F2-G2" again without quotes.

As the points value changes you will need to sort the table: Highlight all your entered and calculated data - say from A2 to the bottom right cell in use. Go to DATA on the menu bar and select SORT. Make sure you have ticked box - no header row. Change order to descending and sort on Column I.

Once set up it doesn't take long to get table in the correct order each week.

Thanks for the formulas. It works, I have set up excel with my sons league table and now I can update every week.
Its easy when you know how.
