moped wont start off the starter motor,

i have a moped, when i try and start it starter wizzez but doesnt throw over the engin. then it slows down. posibly unrelated but not sure, when i do start it and lave it to idle the lights are very dim, reving the engin makes the lights bright again. new battery? am not sure any help would be good,

sounds like the battery get it checked at a dealer or it could be the regulator

If the starter is whizzing and not turning the engine over it sounds liike the starter solenoid is not throwing the starter gear into mesh or the battery is too weak to do it -
As Charly says get the battery checked out - an autospark can do a discharge test on it to confirm its viability he should also be able to tell you where the fault lies.

the starter is of a different style to a car starter. the mechanism that engages the starter sprocket is in the engine not on the starter itself. there are some rollers under spring pressure that when the engine revs over a certain speed (500/600 rpm ) dissengage the starter so it doesn't get dragged to fast and burn out.
you will need someone with a bit of knowhow to split the engine,repair the rollers & sprins and also check the starter for wear as well. not a big job , just need the knowledge of what to do.
before any work is done confirm what i have said is true for your engine, 'cos there are many different types and yours may not be the one i have described.

Hi, it could be one of the following you may not need a new battery try charging it first to see if that improves the bike, if it doesnt then a new battery would be a good option if its over 5 years old.

you may have a blocked exhaust as this often causes mopes to slow down along with the spark plug not having the right gap. pop to halfords an get your self a moped manual (�5) they are really useful for finding out about little troubles as not a lot goes wrong with mopeds.
as i have found it very handy on occasions when fixing my hubbys bike.
