Off-road/motocross "road legal" bike question

I am looking to buy an off-road, motocross style bike. I would like to buy new, however, none of the major manufacturors (suzuki, yamaha, honda etc) seem to have 'road-legal' bikes i.e. no lights, horn etc.

I am aware of the contradiction in wanting an 'off-road' bike to be used on the road but I have been told they are ideal learner bikes and also a lot of fun. I wouldn't be using it for serious off-road stuff but it would be nice once I learn how to ride it to go off road.

I seem to be having a lot of trouble finding a road-legal off road bike. I see them on the road a lot and I assume they have been adapted to be made legal. Being a motorbike novice this seems a lot of messing about.

Buying new now seems like a bad idea anyway, I think a 99/01/02 second hand one will be ideal for maybe around 800-1000. Can anybody recommend where to find such a bike; what size engine bike, what manufacturor and other things I may need to know about road-legal off-road bikes please. Thanks.

I don't know where you have been looking but all the major manufactures make road legal off road bikes.......try any motorcycle shop

As you can see by clicking on the bikes here they all have lights etc

The website you posted has one bike by 'Beta'? All the "all the major manufactures" as you mention in your reply don't appear to be here. I'm sure Beta motorbikes are good, but I would consider the major makes to be; Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki...of which I don't see any on their official catalogues being with road-legal features? Or for that matter pre-owned for sale anywhere? Thanks for trying, Alex.

After a bit more research it appears I need an Enduro type bike which are designed for "long distance dirt biking" and have to be road legal (mirrors, lights etc). Now I know what I'm looking for its a lot easier.
