Do you suffer from stress? This is often a primary cause.

Check your diet too, but I think this is probably pretty much negligible compared to stress.

I'm no expert though!
Normally we only dream during the twilight hours of sleep. If these are occurring throughout the night then you are not getting enough deep sleep. Chocolate is well known for causing nightmares see:

I suffer from stress and eat chocolate and cheese even before going to bed and I don't suffer from violent nightmares - most likely to be an old wives tale - but then again that maybe proves I'm not susceptible to it.

This might sound daft - but try and control your dreams - the best way to describe it is if you don't like the way your dream is going become conscious of it ( while you are still asleep) and turn it in to what you want it.
On the odd time I would get a " bad dream " this is what I do and it does work - for me.
Shouldn't this be under Body and Soul???

thankyou for all your help, the only thing is..

i dont eat chocolate before i go to bed, or cheese.
ever.

aaaand i don't suffer from stress either.

i have tried controling my nightmares but they just seem to get worse, and even when i do wake myself up, it just carries on when i go back to sleep.

Maybe you are a reincarnation of a soldier who died violently in one of the world wars?
Question Author

Do you eat processed food containing many additives, or lots of Chinese food ?

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG, E621) for example gives me horrific dreams and a terrible headache the next day.
Question Author
i eat chinese like its going out of fashion.
and really late at night aswell.

i wont eat any for a while and see if it works =]

cheers x
Good luck I hope something works for you.

The Chinese seem to use MSG with everything. If I ate a late-night Chinese it would guarantee nightmares. I've given up on them, Indian curries instead !
confuse us says do you eat chinese cheese
