I have an oldish DVD player, but it won't play DVD+Rs. Will I have to buy another machine that's compatiable with this more modern technology? It's really frustrating!

my older DVD player was like that and it broke last year but was still under guarantee as it had a 3 year guarantee with it. I bought a new one for around 24 from Asda and it plays all formats
my asda 20 one is better than my sony oone which cost hundreds a few years ago
welcome to the wonderful world of dvd with its mixed 'standards' and incompatibilities.
i suggest you look at the boxes of machines in a local electroncis store to check compatibility before buying. check they accept rewritable (RW) formats as well just in case.
Here is the answer that you are looking, for especially in the section titled 'recordable DVD formats'.
I give you fair warning though that reading this will give you a headache:

Bless you all for your help. I'm not normally a technophobe, but it gets sooooo irritating when you invest in new technology only to have it replaced 6 months later! It makes me want to return to the dark age lol.
Just to let you know that you are not alone in your frustration. I recently recorded some sport on a DVD RAM disc but my friends couldn't get it to play. After some investigation I found that if their machines don't cater for RAM discs then it won't show what is recorded.
And there was I thinking that modern technology was supposed to make life easier.
