Hi,

A friend is trying get the following setup to work, and I'm unsure if it's possible with the stuff he's got.

He's got NTL broadband, which is connected through ethernet to a pc. The router isn't wireless.

What he has got is a wireless adaptor (usb) in the pc with the router attached, and another wireless adaptor connected to his laptop.

Is it possible for him to get internet on his laptop this way? I can't test it because I've got a wireless router, and a bt connection not cable.

This is a guess but would he have to setup the ICS thingy on Windows?

Cheers for any help!

I'm pretty sure he will need a wireless router to get it to work.
Yes, he will need to set up Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop and then create an "ad-hoc" wireless network between the desktop and laptop.

He'll also need to play with the firewalls on the PC's as this is the most frequent reason why this sort of setup won't work.

Thanks for that. I'm guessing it's just easier to get a wireless router?
"I'm guessing it's just easier to get a wireless router? " Yes, and if he wants to use internet connection sharing (as described by Ralph), his main machine will need to be on whenever he wants to connect using the laptop
Well I've got a wireless router, a desk top PC and a laptop and I use my laptop wirelessly to connect to the internet all the time without my desktop being switched on.

I think he meant if he used ICS - as in the main pc thats connected via ethernet will have to be switched on all the time.

Because you have a wireless router, it doesn't matter if the pc is on or off, as it all goes through the router.
