l have noted that DVD-R discs have numbers in front of them like, 1x, upto 16x what does this mean,

Generally low numbers (low speed) are OK for Domestic DVD Recorders for Computer Drives data is transferred much faster.
Some software will calculate and then adjust the burn speed.
