I have inherited a diamond and platinum ring - I am told it is quite valuable.

It is a trio diamond ring with the centre one being the largest (approx) 1 carat.

The markings are C - R, a pentagon with a dot in the middle and a capital 'L' in slight italics.

Please help - I have trawled the internet and the informtion seems to be unclear to say the least.

Many thanks in advance

Hard to say. British hallmarking required four marks until very recently, so if there's only three it may be foreign. Try a jeweller - most are are happy to give free advice on this sort of thing.

Thank you for the reply - sorry I forgot to put that there is an anchor aswell.

Does this change anything

Cheers
I think I'm right in saying that the Anchor means it was made in Birmingham
CR is probably the maker, maybe the pentagon is their own symbol, the anchor is Birmingham (as mentioned) and bear in mind that platinum has only been hallmarked since 1976.

Date letter "L" is 1985.
C - R is undoubtedly the maker's mark, and the anchor shows that the ring was assayed in Birmingham. But that doesn't mean that it was made there. I can't find that maker's mark in any references for Birmingham. Are you sure about the hyphen between the initials? The pentagon may be the symbol for platinum, though the 'dot' in the centre doesn't ring a bell - there would normally be a number there representing the 'fineness', or purity, of the metal.
The italic capital 'L' dates it to 1960. (Stevie21's 1985 letter 'L' is a 'copperplate' capital letter, not an italic one).
"platinum has only been hallmarked since 1976" ??
"The italic capital 'L' dates it to 1960"
