The easy way to work out VAT at 17.5 per cent is to take 10 per cent of the amount, in this case 40.70, halve it, 20.35 and halve again, 10.18 then add all three together - 71.23 (if I've got my sums right!).
407 x 17.5 / 100 = 71.23

If you mean that 407 includes the vat then the initial amount is : 407/1.175 = 346.38 and the vat is 60.62
If that's the easy way SpudQ then I'd hate to see the hard way!
On a calculator you put in the amount ,in your case 407 x 17.5% then press + then = that will give total amount
So there is more than one way to do it Loosehead, I didn't realise that.
or multiply by 1.175
On a calculator multiply 407 by.175 then press + then equals and you should get 478.23
The beauty of my way Loosehead is that you don't need a calculator. You are just taking 10 per cent, halving it (for 5 per cent) and then halving that for the 2 1/2 per cent. Simple!
Simple??? The question did ask 'on a calculator' (or at least that was my interpretation of the question!!)
100% of the time ;-) I'd multiply the original figure by 1.175 to get the new total, or by 0.175 to get the VAT alone.

Some of the "simple" answers I've seen here defy belief! LOL

With other percentages I'd do
407 x 17.5 %
for the VAT alone and press
+
to add the original 407

Nothing new here but I felt compelled to stick my neb in. :-)
just wondering what 'how do u would out VAT on a calculator?' means.
i have enough trouble trying to get my son to realise that if he wants a job that is higher than cleaner at McXXXX he is going to have to learn to construct proper sentences.
sorry just my bug bear with modern youth 'text 'culture.
