What makes your hair curly or straight?

The shape of each follicle in your head. If your follicles are rectangular, the hair will be curly, if they are round, your hair will be straight. If they are oval, wavy etc.

So how can hair be straight when you are younger and then as you get older it goes curly. I am 40 and my hair is now corkscrew curls where it used to be straight.
eating crusts was always thought to give you curly hair?......
if you run your thumb nail along a hair it will curl.

if the opening of your follice is tight, the hair will curl - if its wider or looser it will be straighter
