Can anyone recommend a steam cleaner for carpets that I can hire? Or is it best (with wine stains etc) to get them professionally cleaned ?

I have a cream carpet and 3 children so have used most of the hire and do it yourself carpet cleaners over the years and honestly have never found any to be as good as getting the professionals in.

Just remember not all stains will come out, even with the professionals on the job. Have you ever thought about having it stain protected after being cleaned. I have recently done this and found it very good.

If you are going to DIY the Rug Doctor from Homebase would be my suggestion.

Thanks willspal, I will think about it
I have a hoover wet and dry carpet cleaner and use persil bio in it and find it to get nearly all stains out including poster paint and coffee. For tough stains I pretreat with shout first.

It was an expensive purchase and you may well be able to hire one, but I fully recommend the use of a cleaner and use mine regularly as, like Willspal, I have 5 children and nearly white carpets and my son is quite seriously allergic to dust mites.

I have never used a steam cleaner, but then my carpets are wool and so I don't think I would be able to. You can also get a scotch guard solution to use within wet/dry cleaners for added protection, but don't forget, as soon as the carpet gets wet again with footprints or spillages, the scotch guard does deplete.

hope this helps
