What are sprites?

Sprites were first named in 1993 and are large, very brief, very red flashes of light that occur high in the atmosphere directly above large thunderstorms. They occur a fraction of a second after very strong lightning strokes, but unlike lightening, which shoots down to earth, they soar into outer space.
