Don't know, but it might just be that evolution's in the process of developing a really effective sound gathering outer ear, in which case in future millennia maybe we'll have ears more like cats' or dogs' ears. Then again, we don't really need particularly good ears anymore, since we live so far removed from the natural environment and survival isn't such a driving force. Maybe in the future they'll just be better shaped for plugging earpieces in.

Maybe its because no matter how big they are they are still effective in catching sound waves. cus people with tiny ears can still generally hear the same as people with big ears.

It helps determine the direction of sound, so that we can tell if a sound is above, below, behind and so on.
