Electrical wiring colour codes are standard throughout the EU, including the UK. (Rumours that the UK are planning to change all wires to blue have been denied).
TheChair - this colour coding is used on the continent, I've never seen it in the UK:

We harmonised with the EU in 2006.
Germany has the same as us... Brown(L), Blue(N), yellow/Green(E)

Etch is right. It seems no one told the French. Either that, or they just like being awkward.
France uses Red(L) and sometimes Black(L) occasionally Brown(L)
