If it were possible to edit, there could be replies to a post that made no sense because the original had since been amended.

No they couldn't. You can edit your comments and posts on FB and on most Newspaper comment sites, but others can't edit your comments.

i think it would be too complicated to edit your own posts, a proof read before hand generally helps.

I believe that this was put to the Ed some time ago but his view was that it was not not needed.

Really? You click the 'edit' button, edit your comment then press 'done'

Contibutor A would post something along the lines of "you are a ******** **** and should have your ******* ripped off and stuck up your ****"

Contributor B, and possibly others, would respond in kind whereupon Contributor A would edit his post into something much more innocuous and go running to the Ed, etc. complaining, "Sir! Sir! Look at how badly I am being abused/bullied....".

And then whole posts would descend into additional name-calling and finger-pointing.
