Hi,

I am not sure if it is the same thing, but SONY amplifiers wont play and say "protect" if you have speaker wires touching (short circuiting).

I have never seen it in a dvd player, but maybe there is a similar problem???

Ask some questions in the forums at this dedicated Sony site. You may have more luck. I have used them before and found it useful:

Has it got a child lock? You'll need the manual for that, but there's usually a feature where you hold down the pause button for 5 seconds (or something similar) and it will lock the machine so a child cannot operate it.
With alot of sony products you can do a 'soft reset' by opening the disc drawer, and holding the stop button on the remote for a few seconds. the draw should shut and it will restore the factory settings.
