I recently paid my BT line rental for 12 months in advance. Realising I get no real extra benefits from BT Vision than I would get from other, cheaper providers, can I still swap providers having paid this rental in advance?

Check your paperwork. I'd say you got it cheaper for paying in advance, this probably hooked you in for a year.
Line rental is for the phone line. If you are out of contract for your broadband, you could probably move it, but keep the phoe with BT.
I'm with TalkTalk and also pay my line rental a year in advance to get a discount. I once asked them what would happen if I wanted to leave them within the year and they said I would get a pro-rata rebate. I imagine BT will do the same but you could always ask them - if they think you're going to leave them they might offer you an incentive to stay.
