Getting the boy a new phone for X-mas... now.. do I go with a free phone and a 24 month contract at £15.50+£5 for Blackberry services... or BUY the phone for £130 and have a 12 month contract at £10 inc services... I think the latter works if the prices don't go up... blimey... too old for all this technology...

As an afterthought... if I go with the 'free' phone.. what happens after 2 years.. do they take the phone back...?!
20.50*24=492

10*12+130=250

Nearly half the price overall to buy the phone outright. and a contract is a contract, if they try and increase the price mif term then you have a reason to escape the contract.
No... the phone is yours after the contract term finishes.
You're never too old for anything Hippers ;o)
mif term????

I meant mid term, I wasn't thinking about milfs, honest ;-D
But in chuck's example you've still got to add the phone charges for the second year for a proper comparison.
True, but even adding the extra 120 for the second year it's still cheaper, and you get to choose a new phone at the 12month mark, so you have a phone to sell at the 12month mark to get a bit back :)

Lol - thanks chaps and chapette.. I've got all sort of silly numbers written down.. note to self.. cut back on the Mimosas at breakfast... So I go with buy the phone and the 12 month contract.... pft.. note to self (again!) never have kids!!!..
Yes agree chuck. I was just pointing it out the bl**ding obvious:-)
Can I send you my printer leasing costings to go through, LB?.... they are really complicated and I hate having to do it :)
Just take a look at this face chuck. Does it look like a face that wants to go through your printer lease costings?
I would suggest NOT buying him a Blackberry.

Get him an Android phone.
£492 for the contract period.
£370 for two years on if you buy the phone (including cost of phone).

Btw, I pay £8 a month rolling contract for 1GB data, BB services etc with Virgin sim only.
I would suggest getting him a blackberry.
Kids will want whatever phone is hip and cool at the time. Things to watch out for with contracts, the cost if you use all your minutes up or are calling premium numbers or using a lot of data. If he's under 18 he will have to get it in an adults name and if it all goes wrong they cop for the bad credit. Things are not as bad cost wise as they used to be as most networks give free minutes/texts and some free tinternet. The one thing with PAYT is once the credits gone that's it. Oh and one last thing whatever phone they get make sure they have a good protective case for it, if you break the phone you still pay the contract.
