Cheques are valid for six months unless you get one from some governemnt places which specify 3 months.

this is spot on, unless you know the people at your bank well they may accept it if slightly older.

I always believed that it was 6 months, but someone told me recently that it was at the bank's discretion; and that the cheque could be honoured at over 6 months old if the bank so wished.
