Does anybody know why scissors suddenly get stiff and what to do to remedy the stiffness?

Are they held together by a screw or a rivet?

One pair have a screw and the other a rivet
WD40 should help

Is WD40 oil? I don't like in the UK so don't know what it is.

whoops.....correction....I don't live in the UK
got a smidge of engine oil there? Then a good wipe off
If you can't get WD40 I would use a small amount of cooking oil and make sure you wipe the excess off.

Thanks everyone.....I'm off for the night now...
It can be something as simple as gum. Give them a good clean then lubricate the hinge.
