having a lot of animals in my house, i find we get loads and loads of dust. When the dog shakes, you can see cloads of dust and particulates coming off him if he is in a sunbeam. Is there any machine you can buy that'll take the excess dust and bits out of the air?

yes there is, and I would not be without it, Dyson hand held pet vacuum cleaner, pay the extra for the pet one as the power is stronger, they are pricey but its worth it, my shar pei moults a lot and its sooo handy to pick up the hairs. It lasts about 25 mins then needs recharging but in that time I can vacuum the whole car if need be. Not heavy to hold,no leads to get tabgled up. marvellous for xmas tree pine needles and all sorts, if there was a fire I would go back for it ! no bags needed inside either.Good luck and a happy new year.
In addition, I have found that periodically wafting a steamer over carpets and upholstery breaks the static and allows an normal hoover to clean more effectively.
The use of an air ioniser will reduce the amount of airborne particulates substantially. Take a look at this site:

Do you have to empty out the Airfree or the ionizers? If not, where do the particles go?
The ionisers produce lots of negative ions which charge the particulates which causes them to fall out of the air- so a bit more vacuuming is needed. I have one- and it really does work!
This machine will remove your problem
