Who has one of these? Do you recommend them? What's the basic difference between the older version and new 3G one? Are any other book readers worth considering? Do you have to have a Kindle to download from Amazon, or can use download to any book reader?

Agree with Boxy.

Kindles are too sterile.

Imagine sitting outside a pub, on a warm lunch time, looking out to sea, listening to the gulls ... and pulling out your battered copy of Brighton Rock.

Switching on your Kindle just can't compete.
//daffy I think that you will find that the other end (opposite to the one that fits into the Kindle hole) will fit into the USB port of your PC.///

Nope, it is a plug (to electrical socket) one end and fits in the kindle the other end. I can tell the difference between a USB connector and any other... I built my own PC so I had damned well better know! lol :)
mine is a plug that a usb plugs into.
I get that you are too afraid to try a kindle, but i don't get how you can say what it's like to hold it compared to a book when you dont have one
I thought I was missing a part when I opened it at Christmas and rang them up. They explained that the port is in the plug - just pull it out. Very badly explained. All the calls they were getting were on this subject
I've got a Sony ebook reader for travel/holiday purposes and have no intention of going back to lugging around 5 books on holiday. Well pleased? Yes!

I still read paper books at home.
The recharger cable is the USB computer cable as well - the Amazon branded plug / transformer has a USB socket - just pull on the cable. Really sensible, good design!
A 20kg bag of ski gear needs "lugging" around.

A few paperbacks in your hand luggage don't need "lugging".

=0)
Agree with Venator the cable is a brilliant design but just not explained very clearly
I bought OH a Kindle; she loved it, then Daughter fell for it too, so OH bought her one (the 3G version) I whinged, so daughter bought me one.

In 18 months or so, they'll probably bring out a colour version, do you think?

Unscrupulous people download Kindle books via one of the torrent sites ...
Why do I want to lug around 20Kg of Ski gear? ;)
I love my kindle . I have the non 3g one. I would advocate getting a cover though because then you feel like you are holding a book, Ive got the cover with the built in light which is great for reading in bed and if you fall asleep reading it switches itsself to standby and it saves your page. Love it!
I love my Sony eReader.
The sony e reader is great.

It is slightly smaller than the Kindle and can be connected to the pc.
I have a kindle 3G which is great for travelling, I can download guides or access Wikipedia/google,. I still read "real books", especially foreign literature.
I find the accessability of different fonts and font sizes a great advantage. When my eyes are tired or strained, I can use the large print.
Having said I would never consider using a Kindle, after trying out my daughter's, I wouldn't be without
daffy.......you may have built your own PC, but the USB is in the plug.

Pull it and see.
"Pull it and see".

Is this a variation on, "Suck it and see"?

Been thinking again...if you want to use your Kindle for picking up emails, then the 3G would be better as you could log on to your email provider anywhere.

mike...LOL....just me showing off my technical IT talents.
Sqad - I suppose that makes a change from the doctors 'right take off your clothes and let's have a good look at you'
welshy....LOL OR "take off your clothes and lay them next to mine on the examination couch"
