In general, plant cool-season crops (peas, lettuce, greens, cole crops, and root crops) so they can mature before the onset of mid-summer heat or freezing autumn weather. Some, such as peas and spinach, will germinate in soils as cool as 40 degrees F. Most cool-season crops will germinate and grow if planted about two weeks before the last spring frost.

Plant heat-loving, warm-season crops (such as squash, beans, corn, melons, and cucumbers) only after the soil has warmed, about two weeks after the last frost in spring. These crops require soil temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F.

In general, the best time to plant tomatoes is from mid-April until mid-May. Since tomatoes are a tropical plant, they need a minimum soil temperature of 60 degrees before they are planted. To eliminate the guess work, you can purchase a soil thermometer or check on-line soil temperature reporting services... Good luck!

we don't know whether you are UK based or further afield, even UK based timings will vary for certain plants as the risk of frost is different obviously the further North you go. Could you also be a bit more specific in what you are planning to do in your garden. If it's laying turf, you can do the ground work now ready for April sowing but turf can be laid pretty much anytime, although there are optimum times for best results
