We recently got a new bed and I was going to chop the old one up for firewood. I'm just thinking before I cut up the pieces that the mattress lay on could I use them instead or make something from them. There are about 20 pieces of wood measuring around 3ft x 2.5inches. Just a thought.

If you can't make something yourself you might try your local Freecycle :)
Take a look at The Salvager on Quest TV (Freeview Channel 38). Usually 2pm weekdays.
Laminate them in pairs and make 10 guitar necks.
people always seem to be wanting double beds on freecycle.
criss-cross shelving unit...just by cutting halfway notches at the correct places and slot together

or just small shelves, with brackets

put hooks in a stick on back of doors

coffee table base...if you have a top....
just pile them up a little bit like you would pile up a jenga game...but without the centre ones

attach them together, side by side by nailing very strong cord along each end, then roll it up into and kind of tube...add a base and use as an umbrella stand...or cut smaller ones as pots

nail some upright ones across a few horizontal ones, or to a piece of board, cut across the top in a nice shape...an make a headboard or table top or something similar
How about a Bird Table for the garden nailed to the top of a sweeping brush stale?
Or bird boxes for the blue-tits?
you could make some square or rectangular planters for your garden, quite easy to do I think!..........
