How often should pillows be washed (or replaced)? And if you wash them, what's the best way to do it?

I am sorry, but explicit language like this is NOT allowed on AB, as this is pillow talk!
I try and wait for a really sunny/breezy day, and once a year wash them in the washing machine and then lay them across the surface of my Hills Hoist airer in the garden. Using a pillow protector under the main pillow case will help keep them relatively clean.

Thanks for your answers. I've now tried one - and it came out like a football made of damp cotton wool. I think I'll just buy some new ones!
I have dunlopillos, they are fab!........not cheap, but they keep their shape, and wash wonderfully!............definately worth the money!..........
