Washer/Dryer not heating.

I noticed this morning that my washer/dryer is not drying the clothes. Don't know if it is heating the water for washing (it's a cold fill) yet as I will need to check this next time I use it. My OH is quite handy and has replaces brushes etc before; would it be better to get an engineer out (I don't know of one locally so how do I find a trustworthy one?) or could my OH fix it?
How do we find out if it's the element gone or the thermostat?

Do you still have the owner's manual for the maching? That should give you some diagnostics for troubleshooting. If not there are websites where you can download different manuals, put the make and model and "manual" into your search engine, see what comes up.

Hah!
Manual troubleshooting just says check that the m/c is switched on; that the water supply is on, or that it is not overloaded!
Of course I'm too stupid to ensure that these items are correct aren't I? NOT!
