pe you've checked the fuse box with the aid of a torch. For some reason it may have tripped, switch it back on butshould it keep tripping call an electrician
sorry about that it should have read. "Ihope youve checked the fuse box

In my house it has fuses..

ringmain (plug sockets), immersion heater,

downstairs lights, upstairs lights, cooker.

Therefore the downstairs lights are on a seperate fuse. (My house was built in 1977 for your info)

to the fuse box, find the switch which it switched to opposite way to all the rest and flick it back up again.

first half of my previous reply seems to have disappeared....

This happens in my house everytime a bulb goes.  It 'trips' the electric for either upstairs or downstairs, depending where the bulb was.

I have to go to the fuse box......see above for the rest!

The lighting circuit for downstairs is a stand alone supply and should be indicated in your fuse box. However, if you're asking this question I wouldn't expect you to go rooting around in a fuse box. I suggest you ask a friendly neighbour to assist. 5 minute job.
