I've planted a young lilac in the wrong place, when would be the best time to move it - autumn?

Yes, autumn or possibly winter - not when it's producing shoots and growing.

Thank you, I'll leave it for a while then.
You can move (little) trees and bushes when they are dormant.....November time and before buds or shoots start (up to early spring).
