I have the same problem and until I can afford damp proofing I bought a small dehumidifier and a timer plug so that it goes on for a few hours in the night. The dehumidifier extracts any damp in the air and collects it in a tray...
its amazing how much water it collects in one night! If you leave it near the problem area and you only need a small one that can be tucked away when not in use

Ask the surveyor who did it.
did you get a full survey or just a standard one the latter is just the basics
we found (after a leak on the kitchen ceiling) we still had lead pipes leading up from the downstairs to the bathroom but behind the bath cover, the rest of the pipes on view were copper
