We are about to buy two rugs for our lounge. The choice for the ffibres seems to be either wool or man made fibres such as polypropylene. Can anyone out there advise which material is better for wear ,resisting stains ,sparks from cinders--we have a wood burner--etc etc.Thanks.

I have had a lovely thick cream 100% pure wool rug, trouble is it sheds fibres like you wouldnt believe.
Ive been hoovering it up for over a year.
Man made for me in future.
Would agree with Zacsmaster. The best mix is 80% wool, 20% nylon. They last for ever, resist stains and look so much nice too in my opinion. We have a woodburner and I would never have a man made carpet/rug.
Hey. If you are purchasing rugs, go for wool rugs rather than polypropylene rugs
The benefits of wool rugs are many. Some of them which i have found are:
"The natural crease of the wool fibers make them resilient and perceivable.
The superior quality of the wool rugs makes them highly durable. They do not wear out at the short span of time. Your grand children can also enjoy the grace of natural wool rug.
They have the natural ability to resist stains and water. The soft material of the wool rugs do not deteriorate like the artificial fibers.
They facilitates to taken in dye faster.
Wool rugs are self extinguisher thus they have the natural capability to retard fire.
Wool rugs are eco-friendly and recyclable thus if you are planning to lend helping hand to save mother earth, then this is the best way to start with."

For the single reason you are using a wood burner, your only sensible option is wool. Simply because wool will singe rather than melt when hit with sparks and cinders . I would look for a fairly heavy design to disguise and small burns that will inevitably happen. Faced with the likely hood of damage it's possibly tempting to opt for a cheap wool rug... this would be a big mistake as cheap wool will generally not give good service and is more likely to shed.

Here is a link to information on polypropylene rugs.

you can add a recycled plastic outdoor rug under the table as it is lightweight and affordable. it will not fade, is water and stain resistant and can be used both indoor and outdoor.
