At this time of year you can normally buy last year's seed & potting compost at good discounts. Are the contents still as good as they were - or have the fertilisers in some way deteriorated?

If the bag is unopened then there will be no problem. Likewise, if seeds have been unopened and have not been exposed to extremes of temperatures, particularly heat, they will probably have a germination rate as good as new packetes. Even packets many years old will still have some seeds that will germinate.
