You can, but remember that any plant does not stop growing at a certain height. When the conifers get to a required height, they must be trimmed annualy and even then you must expect an increase in height even if its only two inches. (You cant cut into old wood you see or it will be just twigs!. Watering is your biggest problem with these. If they dry out they drop greenery and again will go brown and they dont recover lost greenery. These conifers are cheap to buy (1.50 each?), so I would plan on replacing them after so many years and starting again.
Oh, and you dont train these things, they just grow very quickly! Good luck :o)
Just be aware that these are a fast growing, thirsty species reaching upto 60 to 70 feet if planted in the ground!!! If you want potted conifers have a chat with a garden centre as they can advise the best ones for the for what you want. Good luck.
Leylandii are very dense and, if planted in pots, risk being blown over by the wind.
Please choose something other than Leylandii, as everyone has said there is nothing to recommend them. There are far more decorative evergreens that are less vigorous.
You can keep them down to size by frequent trimming but as has been said there are better plants
