All I do with mine is cut the flower stems down to the foliage level, and let nature do the rest. Let the foliage die down on its own, then mulch over to protect the root from frost. One word of advice though, give the area a handful of slug pellets. Delphiniums, lupins and hostas are all 'slug magnets' espcially in the spring as new growth appears.
