What is the problem with the BT line as after approx 10 mins conversation the volume fades out to a muted whisper. The person on the other end can hear you OK, but this end it is impossible.

A bit more information needed ;)

Do you have more than one phone? If so, does it happen on all of them? Corded or cordless?

There is only one phone in the house and it is corded. No problems with the broadband either. It does have a microfilter attached and both phone and filter have been replaced in order to overcome the problem (unsucessfully). It has been reported through BT and they state "no problem with the line" check the main socket, but I do not have a 'test' socket.
OK CP1. Assuming the calls are to/from different people, then I'd be 90% sure it's a transmission problem in the exchange. This wouldn't of course show up on a line test.

You'll just have to keep bothering BT until they do something. If they insist that you prove it out of your premises, explain that you can't do that unless they fit an NTE5A (master socket with test facility).

OK Thanks 4candles, with get back onto BT again, again, again!
One good thing about not having a NTE5A, is that Openreach can't charge your Communications Provider (and ultimatley you) if the fault is proved to your own wiring. The reason being that you have no way of isolating your own wiring, as provided by the NTE5A.
