Good gardening skills I guess! Probably a no-fear attitude to creepy crawlies, knowledge of plants and when to plant/cut back/remove, which plants are plants and which are weeds, which flowers would look good together, when they will flower if at all....the list is endless. As for qualifications on paper I wouldn't have thought there is much that you can learn at college/uni/school about professional gardening. Why don't you call your local council and ask?
I would say lots of patience and bags of optimism and you'll learn most from your own mistakes.
Just learning skills and bags and enthusiasm and energy. Read lots of books and don't be afraid to try things out. Be prepared for lots of disappointments, plants don't always do what you expect them to. Gardening is a great stress buster.
You can go to horticultural college and take a course to get a qualification or if youre not that type just get stuck in and learn from your mistakes. If you are doing it as a job it does help if you have a book handy for reference and some bulls**T ready for the customers as well as the roses but it is a very rewarding highly thought of job that keeps you fit and gets you out in the fresh air and as the skills shortage does'nt just apply to plumbers and electricians you will never be short of work.My mate was made redundant from his farming job earning 7.00per hour and started off as a gardener he is in his second year now and has turned away loads of customers at 10 per hour as he has too much work on his hands
