I can measure the external diameter on the sink waste pipe (43mm). Does this mean it's a 40mm pipe ie do pipe sizes relate to internal dianeters (which I can't measure)

Yes - that's a 40mm pipe - I've never really thought about it - but I guess it's internal - be careful though - sounds like a solvent weld pipe - the push fit ones often use a smaller diameter..........don't ask :o)

Just to clarify I'm afraid its not that easy cleversod different makes have slightly differnt sizes that some times inter change on push fit systems and dont forget that solvent welded systems has sizes of its own and we still regard sinks/baths as 11/2 and basins as 1/14 HTH Tez

I still haven't got a clear answer.............. If I go to Homebase and get some nominal 40mm push fit items, will my 43mm pipe fit???
It's probably best to go and buy the cheapest push-fit item Homebase have, take it home, and try it.
The different manufacturers ideas of what 40mm and 32mm dimensions actually are is a total pain.

I wasn't trying to be clever what did broadway really want to know how to identify all the components then go to local merchants to purchase same oh and dont forget to buy a final push fit universal coupling here http://www.screwfix.com/cats/101708/Plumbing/U ni-Compression-Waste;jsessionid=IVENVKC4KUSSSC STHZOCFEY HTH Tez
