washing machine

my washing machine fills up and starts washing but doesnt move on to next stage. i have to move the dial maually on to the next stage....what could be the problem
i checked the filter at the front of the machine, water and small bit of fluff came out but this hasnt made any differece.

could be one of several things ... could be timing out as the necessary temperatur hasnt been reached (broken heating element) ... didnt drain in time (blovkage or broken pump) ... broken timer ... try the same question on www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk ... give them the model and make though .. every little helps .. they are all whitegoods engineers ...
