Sale of unwanted pipe tobacco

Bought several 50g tins of pipe tobacco on holiday and now my husband has given up smoking.Is it illegal to advertise this for resale? Many thanks

Assuming that you imported the tobacco from within the EU, under the 'personal use' rules, it's illegal to sell it unless you first pay excise duty, import duty and VAT to HMRC.

Assuming that you're not going to do all of that, any 'advertising' for a sale will need to be done discretely. (e.g. it would probably be OK to 'have a word with the guys in the pub' but unwise to advertise on noticeboards, in the press or on eBay).

Chris what about selling the empty tins and giving free tobacco to the purchasers later? I mind when the old Sunday Trading Laws were in operation it was legal to sell certain items on a Sunday but not others, some traders were selling vegetables for �100 and throwing in a wardrobe for free to circumvent the law.
