Although you didn't mention the number of letters - Cinquefoil comes to mind.
Hypericum is called the rose of shannon and has yellow flowers.
I think you mean rose of Sharon, apricot. Potentilla's are rose family and have the required characteristics.
I suspect "Lizhoare" was/is doing the same Xword puzzle as myself, as the clue wording is identical! "Incitatus" has the required answer, that being "POTENTILLA". If you find that doesn't fit with 28. Down, the plural form of "amoeba" can be either "amoebas" OR "amoebae"!
