I read in a booklet years ago put out by an electricity company that any pointer directly over a figure is reduced by 1 if next figure is a 9.

Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. Bit difficult to explain without a picture, but suppose one dial is touching 4, and the next dial is on 9.

Well. if the reading was 49, the 4 would have to be very near (on on) the number 5. So the reading must be 39 (in other words, no quite 40)
I hope you can understand that. I know what I mean, but I hope you do.
