can any suggest flowers for a shaded area under a tree

Forget flowers, try ferns. They are gorgeous. Check them out.

Additional to the great answers above, other plants that do well are - Hostas (good with ferns) trouble is slugs love em too.
One I have found very useful is symphytum,it's a kind or low-growing comfry with little cream or blue bell-like flowers,spring and summer ( be warned it does like the place to itself but) will cope with wet, dry, sun or shade.
