when i turn on my central heating the overflow starts to flow, almost as soon as it is turned off this stops, any ideas

Sounds like a faulty or badly adjusted ball valve in your expansion tank.
Had the same problem recently, overflow after ten minutes of turning heating on.
New valve fitted, cured the problem.
