The great thing about outerLondon ( within the m25) is that you are never more then 30 minutes by train into the City. Therefore for a no frills travelodge at 50 should be fine. Area's like Enfield ( North) or Croydon ( south) are nice towns with ample of train links. Travelcards are 6.00 after 9pm for bus and train allday.
How about Holiday Inn Express.

There are loads in London and prices are usually reasonable for the "Express" range of hotels.

Just put London in Find a Hotel area and you get loads, some near the centre.
Travelodges sometimes have cheaper rooms - if you are lucky a 15 or 26 room even in central London
Depending on your budget I lived for a while (for work) in the Travel Inn Hampstead (actually in Belsize Park) which was a fantastic hotel and very convenient but may be more than you want to spend.

I also stayed in the Maranton B&B in Earls Court, again very convenient and nice rooms, no lift though if anyone has a problem with stairs.

I'd suggest ringing them and asking if they can do you a deal, they did for me.

Be careful of some of the really cheap ones in Earls Court and the like though as there are some horrors!!!

It may be worth adding up what you could be spending in train fares being further out to give youself a bit more of a budget.
The Hyde Park Paddington is very decent and cheap. Recently refurbished with nice bathrooms. About 2 mins walk from Paddington so great location too.

As long as you stay in the travelcard zones and wait for the morning peak to be over, your travel for the day to and in London will cost you a maximum of 6.70 a day with a travelcard. As a single tube journey is 4 it doesn't take much travelling to make this worthwhile - it's actually not costing you anything more in fares to stay in the suburbs.

If it's Saturday or Sunday there are no time restrictions on this ticket
These aren't too badly priced, though I don't know your actual budget. The Imperial, Bedford, President and Royal National Hotels are fine, not too sure about the other two. I have stayed in the Royal National a couple of times and would certainly stay again.
hold your nerve and wait till close to the date of travel and use either www last minute.com or just type in your task bar late deals/hotels in london My daughter travels to London every week on business and rarely pays more than 50 per room not per person usually with breakfast in cental London Great deals for food are to be found arond Covent Garden(not directly within the market area though) there are lots of budget priced Italian restaurants and cafe's where you can eat very reasonably in nice surroundings
I can recomend a good hotel in central london that wont cost you an arm and a leg and that is the Regent Palace at Picadilly Circus i have stayed thre a number of times and it is central for most things in london you will find if you do a search through google look at some of the booking agents they sometimes do it cheaper than if you go through the hotel its self
