I'm fighting a losing battle against ground elder on my allotment. I try digging it out year on year but it keeps coming back. Can you suggest any remedies?

Ground elder is a menace. You can clear your own patch only to be invaded from outside as soon as your back's turned. You could try either erect a barrier around your plot, sinking some tough plastic or old slabs around 10 inches deep or using a paint-on glyphosate weedkiller, which I did with some success. By painting it on rather than spraying you can avoid inadvertently killing your veg.
