I would go for a hammer drill, with a reasonably powerful motor if you intend to drill into walls a lot etc. If you are more likely to just drill woodwork and thin plate metal, I got a hammer drill in Woolworths for around 10.00 which has lasted for two years, but I wouldn't recommend it for heavy duty work. as the motor is a bit weak for hard brick etc. BTW it's Woolworths own brand
If you have a B & Q near you I suggest that you pay them a visit. They have a vast range of drills and accessories at very good prices. They will also give you advice. That's where I get all my tools from and I've never had any problems.
We've got loads of electrical DIY tools bought over the years and we've used them heaps. One of the most useful is a recent acquisition - a cordless drill that has hammer action for drilling walls, and ordinary for drilling into wood or using as a screwdriver (well handy that bit..!). I always thought that cordless things were just a gimmick (like electric toothbrushes) but have been proved wrong - on BOTH counts. It really is handy for awkward places and outside (e.g. putting up a new garden gate) and when you need to use a drill with the power off - although it does help to have 2 batteries charged up.
I would personally say get the best you can afford, it's amazing how often you use good tools once you have them. Look around B&Q, Homebase, ironmongers/hardware stores but also check out your local hire centre or wood merchant - there are some great offers out there.
Happy drilling!
ipek, I was just about to suggest buying a 240v drill, i.e. a plug in, if it was just for round the house. The reason being that my battery gun always goes flat at the worst possible moment. But then, I've only got one battery. So, a tip for you Rainbow, if you're buying a cordless drill, get one with a spare battery.
