If so, how do you do it - put crystals in as they are, or make a solution first etc.? Quick answer appreciated

You can add them either way. You may have better results by adding the solid. DO NOT MAKE UP SOLUTIONS IN HOT WATER!!!! Also don't mix with other cleaning agents.

you've probably done the job now, but for anyone else thinking of doing similar, protection is essential, especially for the eyes, as all forms of sodium hydroxide, dust, crystals, solutions etc. will rapidly destroy the eyes if they get into contact with them.
