I have moved into house that has an ornamental grass in the front garden. It was about 12 ft tall by 10 ft wide with very large 'feathers'. About 4 weeks ago we cut it all down to a kind of stump. Now it is all growing back again! We can't burn it as it is right near the house. The stump is made up of hundreds of shoots so we can not poison it as there is no main root to it. How can we get rid of it?!!

thanks in advance

Hi gilby, It sounds like its a Pampas grass you have.
I do know they are a devil to dig out and will take a month of sundays to dig it all out!
Luckely there are a couple of weedkillers that are available from garden centres that will do the hard wok for you, use either a product named- 'Root Out' or 'SBK Brushwood Killer and abide by instructions. You can apply it now, seeing as yuo've cut it down but it usually more effective in the spring. Maybe treat it now, then see if a further application is required in the spring. Good Luck Tbird+
Hi gilby, This will be a pampas Grass. If you want rid of it you will have to do what I did and dig it out. A sharp spade, a pinch and a bit of brute strength, Start off at the side and splice it, slacken off with spade then lever out with pinch. It will take a while and a few rests but you should manage it ok. If its in the lawn level off hole with top soil and sow some grass seed. Other than that it will have to be a good weedkiller eg Root Out or a Brushwood killer. Cheers skylight
Hi Tbird, We're at it again!!!! cheers skylight
SHhhhhhhh Skylight people will talk! ;)

Ps, I'm glad you did'nt go for the burning option, Pampas actuall grows better after being burnt LOL

thank you very much both of you. I think we will go for the weed killer option first as just cutting it down to a stump was hard enough!!! If that doesnt kill it we will have to get some elbow grease on it next spring.

Wish us luck!!!
