We purchased a patio pear tree from a garden centre but unfortunately the growing instructions were in Dutch.we have successfully grown it from a little sprig into a reasonably tall healthy tree but it is quite spindly and we do not know what to do next to stop it growing do we have to pinch out the growing tip?

Hi patsyann,
Yes thats exactly right! cutting off the growing tip or leading shoot will encourage it to become more bushy and compact. every time you see a 'new leader' emerge, just cut it back to a bud and it should be fine. Good Luck Tbird+
