Watering tomatoes & courgettes (zuchini)

I am growing courgettes and tomatoes in 'grow bags', they're doing fine, but I will be going away for the weekend and want to keep them damp whilst I'm away. A friend suggests putting cut off plastic water bottles (empty - like Evian or Vittel) in upside down, like a water reservoir. What I need though is some kind of semi permeable membrane to let the water through slowly through the top. It just gushes out otherwise. Any ideas?

I've done this with a comfrey plant ...

bury the lid-end of the bottle in the soil an inch or so ...

a 2 litre bottle takes about 2 days to soak away in my soil
