I have noticed that the life expectancy of a house fly is very minimal in the house I currently live in. I have never noticed this before.

Amazingly, some of the flies will even just fall out of the air and land on you and keel over and die!

What can be the reason, and should I maybe buy a canary (can't smell anything funny but you never know!)

If you have a gas boiler, get it checked in case it is leaking carbon monoxide.
